Abandoned Dogs: dumped like trash

WALWORTH CO. --- Lakeland Animal Shelter is trying to keep up with the number of abandoned dogs lately.

On Saturday night, six Great Danes were found emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from a skin condition.

On Tuesday, two French Bulldogs were found in a cage on the side of the highway with a note marked "free."

"It never ceases to amaze me the length people will go to to harm animals and then just throw them out like they're trash," said Humane Officer Cindy Wrobel. "It does make me angry."

Shelter director Kristen Perry said it will cost the shelter at least $500 for each Great Dane. They need medical care, and to be socialized. She is confident that people will step up to eventually adopt the dogs.

"Animals are amazing as far as their ability to recover and rebound and trust again," Perry said. "We could learn something from them as humans."

Wrobel hopes to find the owners who abandoned the dogs so that they can be prosecuted.

If you have any information, call the Walworth County Sheriff's Office at (262) 741-4400.
