WAUKESHA --- A 4-year-old boy started a fire Saturday night when he set fire to a bed.

Firefighters were called to the 1700 block of Elder St. in Waukesha around 10:45 p.m. for a fire in an apartment building.

When fire crews arrived they found a working fire in the second floor bedroom. Crews were able to knock the fire down quickly and contain the damage to the bedroom. No other apartments were affected by the fire.

Fire crews later learned that a 4-year-old boy was playing in the bedroom alone when he told his family that there was a fire on top of the bed.

The family threw a blanket on top of the flames to try and smother the fire then left the building to wait for police and fire crews to arrive.

There was $15,000 in damage to the building and contents. No one was hurt in the fire. The family is being assisted by the Red Cross.
