Governor Walker reacts to same-sex marriage ruling

Oak Creek-- For the first time since last Friday's historic ruling lifting Wisconsin's same-sex marriage ban, Governor Scott Walker is now weighing in on the decision and fallout.

Walker attended a ground-breaking ceremony Thursday in Oak Creek where locally-based pet food maker Stella & Chewy's is building a new plant.  After the event, the Governor was asked about his position on same-sex marriage, eight years after he voted with 59 percent of Wisconsinites who voted for the ban.

\"As I pointed out in 2010 when I ran, it really doesn't matter what I think now, it's in the constitution.  And the Governor going  forward, whether it be in the court or ultimately through a decision by the voters of this state, it's in the constitution, the Governor doesn't really have a say in it\" Walker said.

Walker also responded to a report that Wisconsin Attorney General JB Van Hollen may charge county clerks who issue same-sex marriage licenses.  \"I'm not a lawyer so I don't know the legal ramifications.  I just know it's in the state's constitution.  I think it's right for the Attorney General to uphold the constitution.  As far as other legal matters, that's something he's going to have to work out through the court process.\"

Walker said if the federal court decides that Wisconsin's constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage is in violation of the U.S. Constitution, his administration will abide by it.
