Four Wisconsin breweries make top national sales list

BOULDER, Co. (WISC) -- According to a release from the Brewers Association, four Wisconsin breweries ranked in the top 50 producing craft beer companies and overall brewing companies based on sales volume.

The release said out of the top 50 brewing companies, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies.

Monroe's Minhas Craft Brewery was No. 12, New Glarus Brewing Co. was No. 16 and Stevens Point Brewery was No. 23 in the Top 50 Craft Brewing Company category. According to the release, the Brewers Association defines an American craft brewer as small, independent and traditional. Usually they produce 6 million barrels of beer or less.

In the Top 50 Overall Brewing Company category, Sapporo USA in La Crosse was No. 17, Minhas Craft Brewery was No. 23, New Glarus Brewing Co. was No. 36 and Stevens Point Brewery was No. 33. Sapporo is the only Wisconsin-based brewery that made the list that isn't a craft brewery.

The chief economist for the Brewers Association, Bart Watson, said, "In an increasingly competitive and mature marketplace, these brewing companies continue to lead and pave the path for small and independent craft brewers."
