Diva Self Defense class at the Milwaukee Housing Authority Saturday, May 9th

Never mind a card or flowers. How about a self defense class for mom this Mother's Day? Not just any self defense class, but \"Diva Defense.\"

The National Coalition for Black Women- Milwaukee is hosting such a class at the Milwaukee Housing Authority Community Building Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. until noon.

The building is located at 650 W. Reservoir Avenue. You're asked to make a minimum $5 donation to attend.

Renita Switzer of the Coalition for Black Women and Sensei Sahnya Thom of Windhorse Warrior Martial Arts Club were special live guests on the CBS 58 News at 4 p.m.

They took part in a regular feature called \"Our Stories with Michele\" which promotes people and organizations making an impact in the community.

According to Women's Self Defense Institute, every 24 minutes a murder happens, every five minutes a rape occurs and every 54 seconds a robbery takes place in the United States. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women-Milwaukee Chapter is hoping to decrease those numbers by kicking off Mother's Day Weekend with a self-defense class called “Diva's Defense.”

The National Coalition of Black Women – Milwaukee is an organization dedicated to community service. This event is part of the NCBW's Sisters Keeper Foundation, where the organization has a commitment to raising funds and awareness around issues impacting women and girls, specifically human trafficking. Which is a serious community crisis in Milwaukee and around the country.

The number of attacks that occur on women and girls daily is startling. NCBW wants to empower and equip women to protect themselves and show them ways to physically and mentally protect themselves.

Sensei Sahnya Susan Thom will lead the workshop. Thom specializes in “whole” person transformation through mind-body fitness training and coaching emphasizing mindful connection to self, others, and nature. She has 30+ years of martial arts experience and extensive academic studies in Psychology, meditation, mindfulness, and coaching.

During this workshop, Sensei Sahnya Thom, will demonstrate ways for women to survive dangerous situations and show them how to defend themselves. She will share some of the environmental awareness safety tips and anatomy of fear and how to use the fear response for successful self-defense during the interview.

The Diva's Defense seminar will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Housing Authority City of Milwaukee Community Building, located at 650 West Reservoir Avenue.
