Community wears purple in support of 12-year-old Waukesha stabbing victim

WAUKESHA -- More than a fashion statement, young people and adults are showing support for a 12-year-old stabbing victim by wearing purple.

It's called Go Purple Day, which is the young girl's favorite color.

But now, it shines as a symbol of hope, love and compassion.

Students and staff at the victim's middle school have their classmate in mind these last few days of the school year.

Many of them proudly walked through the doors Tuesday morning wearing their purple.

As of noon on Tuesday, nearly $43,000 dollars have also been raised for legal and medical expenses.

It's been 10 days since the young girl was stabbed 19 times and left for dead in the woods.

A care plan is in place to treat her extensive injuries, but the family says her wounds are healing faster than anticipated.

Family spokesperson Dana Hoffmann tells CBS 58 a big shipment of purple Hearts, letters and care packages from across the globe are inspiring the young girl and her loved ones to move past this horrific tragedy.

\"Even though she has seen and her family has seen the absolute worst in people through this incident that the community as a whole, we have good in us and we are here to help and support her,\" Hoffmann said.

Those wearing purple are encouraged to take pictures and post them to the Hearts for Healing Facebook page.

We're told the parents are seeing the posts of hope and showing some of them to their daughter.

They say they can't thank the community enough for their support as they work toward a new normal.
