CBS 58 Visits Fisher House

For well over a year now CBS 58 News has been documenting the efforts to get a Fisher House in Milwaukee.

It is a place where family can stay for an extended period of time while their loved one gets treatment at the Zablocki VA Medical Center.

The Fisher House can accommodate 16 families.

There are big suites, private bathrooms, and a common kitchen.

Today CBS 58 met Dr. Kenneth Lee, he's the spinal cord chief here at the Milwaukee VA.

He was injured in 2004 while serving in Iraq.

His family stayed at a Fisher House near the Walter reed medical center while he was being treated there. He told me that the fisher house helped him with stress relief and making the transition back home.

“The Fisher not only took weight off my shoulders about my family visiting me but it also gave me security. For service members in Iraq and Afghanistan security is always a big worry, and to have the security for your family, there's no word to really describe it,” Dr. Kenneth Lee/ Veteran/Spinal Cord Surgeon said.

The VA started raising the money for the Fisher House about five years ago.

The VA serves vets from 26 states.
