Body of marine killed on military base returns Friday, escort planned from Milwaukee to Janesville

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WISC) -- The body of the Janesville marine who was killed on a military base in California on Jan. 16 will be returned home on Friday, according to a release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.

On Friday afternoon, deputies and officers will be escorting the family of Marine Corps Private First Class Ethan Barclay-Weberpal to receive Barclay-Weberpal at General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee. At approximately 6:15 p.m., the escort will begin from General Mitchell Airport to Whitcomb-Lynch Funeral Home in Janesville.

The public is invited to line the escort route to pay respects to Barclay-Weberpal. During the escort, updates will be available on delays and location of the escort on the Rock County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Barclay-Weberpal, was killed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, about 40 miles north of San Diego.

USMC Capt. Josh Pena confirmed that Barclay-Weberpal was found dead and another Marine was taken into custody Tuesday morning.

Barclay-Weberpal is from Janesville and attended Parker High School. He spent his freshman and part of his sophomore high school years at Parker, then transferred to an out-of-state school in November 2015.

Barclay-Weberpal was assigned to Lima Company Headquarters and Services Batallion at SOI-West. Barclay-Weberpal enlisted in the Marine Corps July 17, 2017, and was awarded the National Defense Ribbon, according to the statement.

The family started a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses. They said the military will cover $10,000, but they believe the circumstances of Barclay-Weberpal's death means the funeral will cost thousands more than what's provided.
