Be aware of home repair scams after storms

MILWAUKEE-- Even after the storms are over, people need to be aware of another possible threat. The so called \"storm chasers\" who rip off homeowners with storm damage.

The Wisconsin Bureau of Consumer Protection reports that in 2013, they received 325 written complaints from homeowners who fell victim to such scams.

\"It's really important to work with a reputable contractor,\" said  Diane Krueger, owner of Carl Krueger Construction and member of NARI (National Association of Remodeling Industry in Milwaukee\"

Krueger adds that a major red flag is when someone who claims to be a contractor is driving in a truck with out of state licence plates.

Ultimately, it's important to ask the right questions.

\"How long have they been in business? Are they licensed? Have they worked with your insurance company? -Make sure they are a reputable contractor and that they've got all their documents in a row and provide you with proper paperwork .. you dont want to do anything with a handshake or verbally,\" said Krueger.

If you need help finding a reputable contractor, visit the NARI website.
