Arctic blast prompts local school districts to close

Milwaukee --  Due to the sub zero temperature and wind chill on Monday, Milwaukee Public Schools and other districts have decided to cancel classes.

MPS Media Manager Tony Tagliavia released the following information:

\"Milwaukee Public Schools will be closed Monday, January 6 due to extremely cold conditions, the district announced Friday afternoon.

Designated essential staff, identified by their supervisors, should report to work.

MPS officials made the decision in the interest of the safety of the district’s more than 78,000 students and its staff after evaluating, among other things, the temperature and the wind chill.

Families are being notified through the district’s automated phone system, text alerts, the district website, social media and through news media. Prior to Monday, January 6, 2014, the district’s most recent cold-weather closure was in 2009.

MPS will make a decision about Tuesday, January 7 on Monday, January 6. An announcement will be made only if school is cancelled.\"
