19-year-old killed, 11-year-old seriously injured after car crashes into tree

A 19-year-old male driver was killed and a 11-year-old boy was seriously injured after the car they were riding in crashed into a tree Sunday morning.

The crash happened around 7:15 a.m. near 36th and Clarke.

Police said the 19-year-old male was driving a 1999 GMC Jimmy at a high rate of speed when the car left the roadway and hit a tree.

Family members identified the man as Dominique Smith. They say he was at a home a few blocks over on 41st and Garfield Streets when another family member asked him to move their vehicle. Somehow, he and his 11-year-old cousin, ended up on 36th Street, where Smith crashed the vehicle.  Smith died at the scene and said the 11-year-old was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Milwaukee Police said that the 19-year-old did not have a license.

Family members say the cousins were good people and they're not sure how this could have happened.
