Officials remind drivers to slow down in work zones during the holiday weekend
WEST ALLIS -- Construction on most major highways in Wisconsin is suspended until Monday to accommodate heavy holiday traffic, but drivers should still be cautious of narrow lanes and lane shifts, which require reduced speeds in work zones.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials say construction zones are not automatically safer with the absence of workers this holiday weekend.
Most construction zone crashes are caused by people driving too fast through the work zones, then having to suddenly slam on the brakes, officials say. Rear-end collisions are frequent during holiday weekends.
The Wisconsin State Patrol, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office and local police departments will boost patrols to help keep motorists safe.
In addition, the Wisconsin State Patrol will use planes to track speeders.
