Tired of answering four weeks of questions, Wisconsin took its frustrations out early and often against streaking Purdue.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Tired of answering four weeks of questions, Wisconsin took its frustrations out early and often against streaking Purdue.
Now the Badgers, dismissed from the BCS picture after consecutive losses to Ohio State and Iowa, have a legitimate shot to win 10 games before the bowl season after a 37-0 rout of Purdue on Saturday to improve to 6-2.
"It was great. It's almost been a month since our last win," quarterback Scott Tolzien said. "Our run game was awesome but our passing was pretty average. We have some improvement to do there and I don't think we've reached our potential as an offense yet."
Wisconsin plays three of its final four on the road, but will likely be favored in all four games in the stretch at Indiana, home for Michigan, at Northwestern and at Hawaii. Win out, and Wisconsin
could finish no worse than fourth in the Big Ten Conference after improving to 3-2.
"It's always good to play well," Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said. "It cures a lot of ailments."
The Badgers, who spent an off-week brooding after consecutive losses, came out with 11 straight runs on an 80-yard drive and never gave the Boilermakers a chance to counter.
"We were just hungry and ready to play," said linebacker Chris Borland, who watched as the tone was set on the Sunday practice of Wisconsin's off week. "Usually, we don't have a good practice, but
guys were hitting, ready to play. You could tell we were hungry to get back on the field."
No one rebounded better than John Clay, who was awkwardly bent over in a loss to Iowa and has been working through an ankle injury. Clay rushed for 123 yards on 24 carries and scored three times against Purdue.
"Once we started rolling, (our) offense is very hard to stop," Clay said.
It was a big disappointment for first-year Purdue coach Danny Hope and the Boilermakers (3-6, 2-3) after consecutive wins over Ohio State and Illinois.
"We did not see it coming," Hope said.
Purdue had been competitive in all of its losses, including taking Oregon down to the wire on the road, but couldn't do anything against the Badgers and gained only 141 yards in the game. Wisconsin had 150 yards after the first quarter in its first shutout of Purdue since 1955 and its first shutout of a Big Ten opponent in 10 years.
Joey Elliott went 5 for 23 for 59 yards and an interception before being benched and the Boilermakers went 2-for-16 on third-down conversions.
"I'd like to think that we came out here trying to compete," Hope said. "We worked hard in practice. They had a game plan that they worked on and they were ready to execute. Again, we are very
disappointed."
Besides Clay, Wisconsin ran multiple reverses, converting five first downs, and tight end Lance Kendricks gained 91 yards on four of those carries.
"They didn't see a lot of power so we wanted to come out and put a lot of pressure on them," Kendricks said. "We put up some great points, so we really sent a message."
It's a message Wisconsin hopes it can carry over in November and beyond.
"I know we didn't play well in the second half of Ohio State and Iowa. Quite frankly, that really is disturbing to me and I'll never get that out of my system, but we can't let those two teams come up again in the future in these next three weeks that are in
front of us in the Big Ten schedule that remains," Bielema said. "We'll just focus on Indiana."
