H1N1 and Halloween
Simple tips to avoid spreading H1N1 while trick-or-treating
WAUWATOSA - The H1N1 outbreak has some parents concerned about whether it's safe to send kids trick-or-treating this weekend. Health officials have dubbed kids the super-spreaders of the virus, and with thousands of them going door-to-door, parents are left wondering whether extra precautions are needed this year.
Doctors recommend a few simple tips to avoid spreading H1N1 this Halloween. Besides the old standby of washing your hands, doctors suggest that people handing out candy place the treats in kids' bags, rather than having young hands reach into the bowl. Less handling equals fewer germs.
If you're still concerned about germs on candy wrappers, let the treats sit for a few hours before letting kids dig in. According to doctors, germs won't survive on the wrappers for more than 2-8 hours. To avoid any temper tantrums from kids who can't wait, give them a few pieces of candy that you've set aside from your own bowl or unwrap the candy for them and place it on a plate.
Another tip - don't let kids share masks. Because of the proximity to the nose and the mouth, you can get infectious droplets that can be transmitted to the next person that puts it on.
