The missing kayaker Douglas R. Winter's search came to an end on Sunday after noon after attempts to find him proved unsuccessful. New this morning officials are saying the search may not resume searching Monday due to high waves.
Winter was kayaking in the area of Split Rock Lighthouse and Two Harbors in Duluth, Minnesota.
According to the Lake County police department's press release, it was in this area that they found his life jacket and a bottle of prescription pills belonging to Winter.
Although he was assigned to teach eighth grade science at MPS' Audubon Technology & Communication Center he had not been present since late August.
Lake County police also confirmed that Winter sent a letter with money to two relatives before he left for his trip to Minn.
His car was found in the parking lot of the hotel he was residing in, the Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay. The car was unlocked with the keys left inside along with a clothing bag, a check book, and a wallet.
The last known contact Winter made to anyone was a call placed to a friend around 8:40 p.m.
The friend reported that Winter had said he was out kayaking on Lake Superior, he could not see the shore and was around 2-3 miles away. He mentioned that the waves were getting large and that he would probably head back in.
