Should Milwaukee's Mayor take over schools?
Barret explains why he thinks it's best
MILWAUKEE-Mayor Tom Barrett says he should lead the city's school system.
Barrett made the announcement Friday following a statement the day before from Governor Doyle expressing the same wish.
Under the plan, the Mayor would be allowed to appoint school board members.
Barrett believes such a move would make MPS eligible for billions in federal aid set aside for districts taking on dramatic reforms.
Approval by the state legislature is required.
School Board President Michael Bonds resigned from a special reform committee when he learned of the Mayor's and Governor's plan.
