Hair found in victim's hand leads to arrest
MILWAUKEE - A clump of hair found in a murder victim's hand helps police crack a double murder case in Milwaukee. It was back on January 23rd that Salvador Chavarin and Benjamin Nunez were shot and killed outside a tavern on 7th and Greenfield during an attempted robbery. Chavarin didn't give up without a fight, though, and ripped a chunk of hair from one of the suspects. Police arriving on the scene discovered the hair still in his hand, and sent to it a crime lab. Its DNA analysis then led police to arrest one person in connection to the case.
Chavarin's niece, Guadalupe Avalos, says he liked to see justice served, and that maybe this is why he fought the attacker. "An explanation is what we needed," Avalos said. "Either way it's not going to bring my uncle back."
Police are still trying to find a second suspect in the case.
CBS 58's Fior Hernandez reports.
