Fond du Lac Springs runs past Arcadia

MADISON (AP) -- Arcadia coach Derek Updike knew his team would be facing a formidable Fond du Lac Springs offense in Thursday'ss WIAA Division 5 state final.
But the Ledgers were even better than advertised. Senior running backs Anthony Parker and Brian Fellers each ran for more than 100 yards as Springs rolled up 329 yards on the ground and steamrolled to a 42-7 victory over the Raiders at Camp Randall Stadium.
"They got control of the line of scrimmage and we kind of ran into a buzzsaw," said Updike, whose team needed to win its final regular-season game just to qualify for the playoffs and was making its first appearance in the state finals. "I was very impressed with their line -- they were every bit as good as we expected, and then some."
The Ledgers (14-0), who earned their second WIAA title to go along with the eight they won in the defunct Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association, amassed 469 total yards -- a record for a Division 5 final. Somerset held the mark with 448 in 2002.
Parker finished with 116 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, while Fellers added 107 yards and a score on 18 attempts. Senior quarterback Mitchell Beau also had a pair of TD runs, rushed for 76 yards and threw for 140 yards in a light rain.
"It all fell to the offensive line. They did the heavy lifting all we did was run behind them," Parker said of Springs starting unit of seniors Kyle Coen, Kyle Kiefer, Joe Belisle and Jake Batterman and junior Dan Soldner. "I kept looking up at the scoreboard to see how many yards we had. That was crazy, we went
over 300 yards rushing. And we set a record for most yards. It was crazy."
Arcadia (11-3) put together a nice drive to open the game, moving to the Ledgers 22-yard line. But on fourth-and-5, Raiders quarterback A.J. Bellville's pass intended for running back Reid Christ on the right side was broken up and nearly intercepted by Springs senior linebacker Dan McEssy.
The Ledgers promptly marched 77 yards on 11 plays, with Beau scoring on a 7-yard run to put Springs ahead. The quarterback added a 29-yard TD run early in the third quarter that made it 28-0; Parker and Fellows each had 2-yard scoring runs in between.
"(Arcadia) did a great job of starting off the game," said Ledgers coach Bob Hyland, who improved to 348-99-2 in 39 seasons. "If we don't make that stop, things are a bit different if they get one in right away. We had enough to stop them, and they couldnt stop our offense. They really couldnt stop it at all."
