Lazar Hayward scored a collegiate-high 28 points to lead Marquette to an 86-60 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday night.
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Lazar Hayward scored a collegiate-high 28 points to lead Marquette to an 86-60 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday night.
Hayward was 12 of 20 from the floor to go with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jimmy Butler added 13 points and seven rebounds for Marquette (2-0), which never trailed in extending its nonconference home winning streak to 22 games.
David Cubillan and Dwight Buycks each scored 12 points for Marquette, which shot 52 percent from the field.
Hillary Haley led the Hawks (0-2) with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Mark Robertson chipped in 15 points for Maryland-Eastern Shore, which had 19 turnovers compared to just nine for Marquette.
The night belonged to Hayward. The senior, who scored just nine points in the Golden Eagles' 85-62 victory over Centenary on Friday, scored 18 of his points Tuesday night in the second half.
Hayward's previous high game was 27 points last Dec. 19 against Western Carolina. He averaged 16.3 points last season and was selected to the preseason all-Big East first team.
A basket by Hayward capped a 10-2 run to open the second half that gave Marquette a 50-35 lead with 16:07 left.
Hayward also had consecutive baskets as part of a 10-0 run midway through the half. Jimmy Butler capped the run with a three-pointer for a 64-42 lead with 10:43 remaining.
