Developing Story: Wauwatosa tactical situation over; fire investigation begins

by Tom Durian

WAUWATOSA -- Fire crews are on scene of a house fire at 1430 119th Street. The call came in shortly before 9 a.m. that the home was on fire.

When crews arrived on scene and started to battle the flames, they heard what appeared to be gunshots. Believing someone was firing on them, fire crews retreated and tactical police units were called in.

Firefighters had to be accompanied by police with shields to even connect to fire hydrants. The home was allowed to burn for about an hour with crews spraying water from adjacent homes.

Shortly before 11 a.m. authorities determined if there was indeed a gunman or woman inside the home, they were no longer a threat to crews.

Witnesses told police that there may have been guns, ammunition, or even fire crackers inside that could have also made the noise similar to gunfire.

Shortly before noon witnesses saw fire crews entering the home. More details are expected to be released throughout the day.
