Kathy's House

MILWAUKEE -- Love and support are just as important to battling an illness as the medical procedure, but some patients aren't always able to have loved ones around during a difficult time.

That's where Kathy's House comes in.

The home in Wauwatosa is available for out-of-town families to stay while their family member is treated in Milwaukee.

"It was great for us to come, otherwise, I probably wouldn't be here with my husband or I'd probably be living in the hospital," said Marie Campana who is staying at Kathy's House while her husband is treated for brain cancer.

Dick Vogel founded the home 11 years ago after his own daughter lost her battle with cancer. While visiting her in the hospital, he saw a number of patients who were going at their disease alone.

"We realized how tough their journey is easier because having family support or friends support make it much easier," said Vogel.

The house used to be a priest's residence and it has 18 suites that can fit up to six family members.

Like any house, it has a comfortable living area and a kitchen when families can cook or just chat.

"It's like being home," said Campana. "It's wonderful, very peaceful."

Vogel doesn't charge families to stay at Kathy's House but asks for a donation towards the non-profit.

"We really, really support the journey," said Vogel. "We're happy to listen to them and share their lives with us and encourage a tough time, very frightening."

Because the home houses 5,000 people a year, Vogel says they're always looking for volunteers to help out.
