Christmas Fantasy House
ELM GROVE -- If you think your house is the best on the block when it comes to your Christmas decorations, you probably haven't seen the Christmas Fantasy House.
For the last 19 years, a different house in Elm Grove or Brookfield has been decorated with everything imaginable all to help fight cancer. Proceeds from the event in November go to the American Cancer Society. In fact, the Christmas Fantasy House has raised more than $2 million dollars. The idea started when a woman named Loretta Thompson wanted to share her extensive ornament collection with children in the hospital. The idea grew into the Christmas Fantasy House and though Thompson passed away before the first one, her friends have helped carry on the tradition. "To me, its an opportunity to come to a home that's been beautifully decorated and you have people that come together, volunteering their time," said board member Carolyn Swanson. She's a cancer survivor and got involved in the house just by being a visitor to it a few years ago. The 2011 Christmas Fantasy House was located in Elm Grove at Peggy Coakley's home. "We thought we built this beautiful home and if we could use it to give back to the community in any way we should look into that," said Coakley. She says when she saw her home all decorated for the first time it didn't even look like her house. Her son's room was transformed into a cabin, complete with a reindeer wash in the bathroom. Coakley's daughter's room was a fantasy of sugarplum ferries. There is even a Memory Tree to honor those affected by cancer. The house is open for nine days but it takes weeks to complete all the decorating. There's a different theme in each room done by a different decorator. Cathy Scholl has been with the group for more than ten years and says everyone on the board comes from a different background but they all share the same goal: fighting cancer. "If you love Christmas and hate cancer, you're welcome to join us," said Scholl. The group is looking for it's 2012 home. For more information, log onto www.christmasfantasyhouse.com |
