MEQUON, WI – April 5, 2013 – For the first time in the state’s history, a Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League team from Wisconsin has been invited to participate in the Jr. FLL World Festival Expo, which will be held April 25-27, 2013 in St. Louis, Missouri. The team, the LEGO® Pizza Men, consists of two first-graders, two second-graders and two third-graders from Wilson Elementary School in Mequon, Wisconsin.

The team is one of only 40 teams out of approximately 2,000 from around the world who are invited to attend this exclusive Jr. FLL® showcase. The event will be held at the Edward Jones Dome, also the home of the St. Louis Rams. They will showcase their work and meet other kids who share their interest in science and technology.

Throughout the 2012 season, the team participated in a challenge called “Super Seniors,” during which they learned about the challenges senior citizens face on a daily basis. They were tasked with performing research, brainstorming, learning about simple machines, proposing a solution, and then building a model together to represent their solution. Interviewing grandparents, neighbors and members of the community, the children found a theme: many older adults have trouble reaching high or low shelves. They brainstormed a solution of rotating vertical shelves, like a Ferris wheel, and built a model entirely of LEGO pieces to represent the idea. They also created a team Show Me Poster to describe their process and represent their findings.

“I watched in awe as these children, at such a young age, found a wonderfully creative way to solve a problem,” said Gabrielle Halpin, team coach and parent of two members of the team. “Children think with their hands. They become engaged with activities that involve objects that they can see, touch, manipulate and modify, and they know how to let their minds wander without restriction. This process of investigation and discovery is what science and engineering are all about.”

“My son is interested in math and science, and this is such a great outlet for him to apply technology to solve problems,” said Michael Friederichs, parent to one of the team members. “They have fun and learn a lot at the same time.”

“This is different than when kids open a LEGO set with instructions to build something,” said Dave Peterson, team mentor, facilitator for several robotics teams in the Mequon-Thiensville School District, and parent to one of the team members. “It is magical to watch them create something just from their imagination, and create it together.”

“I hope the kids get a sense of what opportunities are open to them when they get older,” added Michael. “Learning programming to make robots that can perform tasks, working in teams to solve problems, trying various ideas repeatedly until you get one that works, and then improving upon it over time are all skills engineers and others need in today's workplace.”

The LEGO® Pizza Men is sponsored by Rockwell Automation, Waukesha Metal Products and Kumon Math and Reading Center of Mequon. Team Members are: Jonah Friederichs, Alex Halpin, Brady Halpin, Aidan Patten, Aryan Patel and Jacob Peterson.

The LEGO® Pizza Men are a Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) team based at Wilson Elementary School in Mequon, Wisconsin. Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) captures young children’s inherent curiosity and directs it toward discovering the wonders of science and technology. Jr.FLL was developed to introduce 6 to 9 year-olds (grades K-3) to science concepts and teamwork. Jr.FLL was created through a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and The LEGO® Group.
