http://www.cbs58.com/eye-news/201460671.html

MEQUON, WI – April 5, 2013 – For the first time in the state’s history, a Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League team from Wisconsin has been invited to participate in the Jr. FLL World Festival Expo, which will be held April 25-27, 2013 in St. Louis, Missouri. The team, the LEGO® Pizza Men, consists of two first-graders, two second-graders and two third-graders from Wilson Elementary School in Mequon, Wisconsin.

The team is one of only 40 teams out of approximately 2,000 from around the world who are invited to attend this exclusive Jr. FLL® showcase. The event will be held at the Edward Jones Dome, also the home of the St. Louis Rams. They will showcase their work and meet other kids who share their interest in science and technology.

Throughout the 2012 season, the team participated in a challenge called “Super Seniors,” during which they learned about the challenges senior citizens face on a daily basis. They were tasked with performing research, brainstorming, learning about simple machines, proposing a solution, and then building a model together to represent their solution. Interviewing grandparents, neighbors and members of the community, the children found a theme: many older adults have trouble reaching high or low shelves. They brainstormed a solution of rotating vertical shelves, like a Ferris wheel, and built a model entirely of LEGO pieces to represent the idea. They also created a team Show Me Poster to describe their process and represent their findings.

“I watched in awe as these children, at such a young age, found a wonderfully creative way to solve a problem,” said Gabrielle Halpin, team coach and parent of two members of the team. “Children think with their hands. They become engaged with activities that involve objects that they can see, touch, manipulate and modify, and they know how to let their minds wander without restriction. This process of investigation and discovery is what science and engineering are all about.”

“My son is interested in math and science, and this is such a great outlet for him to apply technology to solve problems,” said Michael Friederichs, parent to one of the team members. “They have fun and learn a lot at the same time.”

“This is different than when kids open a LEGO set with instructions to build something,” said Dave Peterson, team mentor, facilitator for several robotics teams in the Mequon-Thiensville School District, and parent to one of the team members. “It is magical to watch them create something just from their imagination, and create it together.”

“I hope the kids get a sense of what opportunities are open to them when they get older,” added Michael. “Learning programming to make robots that can perform tasks, working in teams to solve problems, trying various ideas repeatedly until you get one that works, and then improving upon it over time are all skills engineers and others need in today's workplace.”

The LEGO® Pizza Men is sponsored by Rockwell Automation, Waukesha Metal Products and Kumon Math and Reading Center of Mequon. Team Members are: Jonah Friederichs, Alex Halpin, Brady Halpin, Aidan Patten, Aryan Patel and Jacob Peterson.

The LEGO® Pizza Men are a Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) team based at Wilson Elementary School in Mequon, Wisconsin. Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) captures young children’s inherent curiosity and directs it toward discovering the wonders of science and technology. Jr.FLL was developed to introduce 6 to 9 year-olds (grades K-3) to science concepts and teamwork. Jr.FLL was created through a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and The LEGO® Group.

Bowl - Volunteer - Donate

The Nuts About Giving (NAG) team is proud and honored to be hosting a 9-Pin Tap, Singles Bowling Tournament on Saturday, May 18, 2013 to benefit Homes for Our Troops. We are uniting people together on Armed Forces Day to state their gratitude for our soldiers' sacrifices to preserve the freedoms of America. Mobility is a freedom we take for granted. Some of our returning troops have lost not only their mobility, but the place they used to call home. Accessibility is now diminished by their injuries. Let's help the men and women of all military branches regain their independence.

Homes for Our Troops is a national non-profit, 501(c)3 organization based in Tauton, Mass. founded in 2004. Their mission is to build specially adapted homes for service members, who have been severely injured in combat operations since September 11, 2001. All homes are built at no cost to the veteran through the generous support of individuals, foundations, and corporate contributors. Homes for Our Troops received a Four Star rating from Charity Navigator.

At about 11:45am on Oct 9 2012 there was an automobile that caught fire in a parking lot managed by Greater Milwaukee Auto Auction. The fire was first seen on the north side of Brown Deer Road. The fire had grown large enough to which firefighters pulled all bystanders away due to the flames and flying glass. The fire department put great effort in reaching the fire. However, the cars were parked very close to each other preventing a fire truck to reach the cars that caught on fire. The firefighters resorted to cutting through the fence and manually transporting all necessary equipment to the fire. The video was taken behind a chain linked fence. The fire lasted for approximately 40 minutes. At the time (12:30pm) no report of anyone being injured.

I find myself struggling sometimes with the loss of family and friends at such young ages. It hardly makes sense when there is so much more life to live, adventures to experience, and roads not traveled. I try to be optimistic, yet it is difficult, when the past three years, I have been to more funerals than birthday parties.

There are greater goods, which have resulted from these funerals, though at the time of attending, the vision or thoughts were not there. It is a coming together of people, some known, some not known, and some whom we now call our friends. Through these events, I have grown to know the impact I and others had on the lives of the friends and family passed, yet when they were living they were unspoken words...you just knew you were always there for each other.

Greater was the impact they had on me. I had the wonderful opportunity to have "The Waterman" Jon as a friend. The first time I met him at Kips Inn (our Cheers); we talked about a number of things from family to playing pool to Snoopy and the Red Baron. My husband had never heard the song. Jon & I could not believe he had not. A week later, we ran into Jon and guess what? He gave us a CD of Snoopy's Red Baron Christmas. "The Baron then offered a holiday toast. And Snoopy, our hero, saluted his host. And then with a roar they were both on their way. Each knowing they'd meet on some other day."

For those of you, who are not familiar, Jon was the truck driver, who died in the semi-trailer/car accident on May 26th in Caledonia. His final act of kindness was swerving to miss the car. At age 45, he was in the prime of his life. His world revolved around his daughters Julie & Jill and wife Christy of almost 25 years. He was the "shirt off the back" kind of guy, who would drop what he was doing for you, if you needed him to. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone. His dry, corny humor always made you laugh.

Jon was also a KC-135 Crew Chief for the Wisconsin Air National Guard. He took great pride in his ability to help and be there for people. Since he can no longer physically be here to take care of his daughters, he will be able to take care of them through us. A college fund called "Jon Schweiss Memorial Fund" has been established and donations can be made at any US Bank location.

July 21, 2012 from 1pm - 5pm, there will be a fundraiser held at Kips Inn, 837 S. 108th in West Allis. All proceeds will be donated to Julie & Jill's college fund. The continued celebration of Jon's life will include a 50/50 cash raffle, bucket raffles for numerous gift certificates, grills, a family pack for the WI Dells, and much more. We hope you will join us and pass the word on. Let's help Jon, help his family.

If you would like to donate a raffle item, please drop off at Kips Inn with any of the bartenders, care of The Waterman.
