Event Description

The Friends of the Racine Public Library will host our 26th annual Breakfast with the Authors and Annual Meeting from 8:30 a.m. to noon, on Saturday Nov. 10 at Roma Lodge, 7130 Spring Street.

Tickets are $18 or $15 for members of the Friends. Prepaid reservations are required. Mail checks payable to Friends of the Racine Public Library to Jill Hartmann 1611 College Avenue Racine, WI 53403. For more information, call Hartmann at (262) 637-5305.

Presenting this year are Barbara Celeste McCloskey, author of the “Apple Pie and Strudel Girls” series; Dr. Richard D. Stewart, a specialist in internal medicine and medical toxicology; and the mother-daughter team of Magill Weber and Janet Mrazek who will share their expertise on Door County hiking trails.

McCloskey, a writing instructor at Gateway Technical College, has published four novels inspired by her parent’s generation and the challenges they faced in the 1930′s, 40’s and 50′s. Her latest, “The Love Immigrants”, is the story of three war brides adjusting to life in the United States.

Stewart’s book, “Flight for Life,” is the dramatic, true story of the medical rescue of twenty-two burn victims after an explosion at SC Johnson’s Nigerian subsidiary in 1982. As SC Johnson’s corporate medical director, Stewart teamed with company executives, the University of Michigan’s burn center and the U.S. State Department
to fly the victims to the United States for life-saving care.

As an accomplished birder and general naturalist, Weber, a Racine native, is currently working as a project manager for The Nature Conservancy in California. “Door County Outdoors,” her first book, was illustrated by her mother, the artist Janet Mrazek. Their family joined together in researching the book, hiking each trail from Rock Island to southern Door County.

In addition to these author presentations, the event will include a breakfast buffet, book sale and author signings. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the buffet will open at 9.
