Low GPA? Just hold up a sign about it.
Here’s a story you might not have seen on TV that has some of us in the newsroom talking.
A mother in Florida was fed up with her 15-year-old son’s lack of enthusiasm for getting good grades and low GPA so she made him hold up a sign on the corner that read ”GPA 1.22 … honk if I need education.”
She claims everything else she tried (help with homework, taking away his cell phone, etc) didn’t get through to him so this was her last resort. Some experts criticized her, saying that it was humiliating and she was even reported to the Department of Children and Families.
I don’t think she was completely in the wrong. As long as the student was in a decent neighborhood when he was holding up the sign, I don’t see a problem. I know at that age, I would have been embarrassed enough to get my GPA up if I had to stand out like that in front of my peers.
Motivation comes in different forms for different people. I personally believe positive reinforcement works best, but for stubborn students perhaps humiliation will work.
