UK or KU? Wildcats and Jayhawks Ready to do Battle

by Andrew Coughlin

A quick quip on the National Championship game.

I'm not the biggest fan of Kentucky coach John Calipari.  For me, Kansas coach Bill Self is the better teacher and "field commander".  He did win the Naismith Coach of the Year honors by leading his team to the championship game.  He has an NCAA title on his resume.  In 2008, the Jayhawks beat favored Memphis in overtime.  Guess who was the coach of Memphis that year?

John Calipari.

Calipari has now led three teams to the Final Four: UMass, Memphis and Kentucky.  This is arguably his most talented team and if he does not win the elusive title he's surely been coveting, questions will certainly arise about his coaching effectiveness regarding the big game.

Self is indeed the better coach, doing more with less talent, but there is no arguing the talent and athleticism on Calipari's Kentucky squad.  He probably has 3 lottery picks and 5 NBA ready players on this team, depending on who declares for the draft.  He'll just need to harness these guys for another 40 minutes.

In the 2012 NCAA Tournament there is Kentucky......and then the field.  They are that good, as much as I would not want to admit it.  Kansas might hang around and I think they'll keep it within single digits, but I believe this will be Calipari's first National Championship.

Here's a good article by's Andy Glockner comparing the two coaches in this matchup.  Have a read and let me know what you think.
