Pride and smiles along the Harley assembly line
Pilgrim Road Factory a major tourist attraction during Harley celebrations
MILWAUKEE-The assembly line at Harley's Pilgrim road plant was pumping Friday as thousands of riders in for the anniversary celebration took tours to see where the magic first begins.
"It's really eye opening," said Paul Weston in town from Melbourne, Australia.
Workers undaunted by all the extra eyes on them. You see they're proud of what they do and how they do it.
"It's the best opportunity I've ever had," worker Quincy Jones told CBS 58's Michele McCormack.
You'd expect the exuberance since so many believe in the Harley Davidson brand.
But the lack of tension is quite remarkable when you consider just a a handful of years ago there was talk of Harley leaving Milwaukee. Jobs were cut, people retired early, and the controversial decision was made to bring in more seasonal workers.
"Our workforce has great perspective," General Manager John Lowry says, "because what we we're trying to do together, because this is a team sport, is to save this company. Save the jobs in Milwaukee."
